Data are presented on the background EDTA-extractable Cd concentrations in soils of North Bulgaria and Cd concentrations in leaves of sugar beet. EDTA-extractable Cd and plant Cd are below the critical levels and indicate that soils and plant production were not contaminated with Cd. The data confirm the need for the use of other extractions, as well as a large variety of soils in order to develop a model for Cd availability in soils.
