[Digestibility of nitrogen compounds in horses]

The dietary nitrogen compounds requirements in horses are relatively low - about 800 g for a horse of 500 kg live weight. Not only the concentration of nitrogen compounds, but also their digestibility varies greatly from one plant species to another and depends also on plant developmental stages and other factors. This must be taken into account when formulating feed rations. Feeds with low coefficients of digestibility of nitrogen compounds are for example straw (0.2-0.3), hay and silages (about 0.5-0.7), feeds with high coefficients are for example milk (more than 0.9), extracted soyabean, sunflower and linseed meals, some cereals and seed legumes (about 0.8).
