Comparison of selected physiological functions in heifers and bulls

Selected physiological parameters in heifers and bulls bred in the same environment were compared and the gender effects were evaluated. An observation was conducted two times for 285 and 261 days, respectively, in a classical brick stable in a joint group of 6 heifers and 6 bulls since their age of 15-25 days. Mean daily weight gain of heifers (0.644 and 0.502) was lower than that of bulls (0.716 and 0.549 kg). The respiratory rate was higher in heifers than in bulls as well as the heart rate and rectal temperature. The heat production per kg of live weight per 1 hour was higher in heifers (9.661 kJ) than in bulls (9.091 kJ) in the first experimental group and higher in bulls (10.574 kJ) than in heifers (10.199 kJ) in the second experimental group. The differences between bulls and heifers in physiological parameters were not significant. Generally, the bulls reacted by more obvious shift in physiological functions on technological changes, while the heifers reacted on abrupt changes in feed rations.
