The objective of this study was to describe the morphology of professional phagocytes (PP), identified by simultaneous light microscopy, as imaged by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The study was carried out in 12 virgin bovine mammary glands which were irrigated with physiological saline to obtain lavages. No bacteria were detectable in any of the lavages. Absolute cell counts, standardised to a constant volume of 20 mL, amounted to 1.5 x 10**6 mL +/- 0.9. The cell population included mononuclear phagocytes (MoP), which prevailed in the differential count, lymphocytes, and neutrophils. PP were identified by SEM in nonadhering, adhering and migrating states. Each of these groups showed specific morphological patterns differing in particular in surface structures. PP with surface alterations, indicating possible adverse effects of intramammary factors, were observed among normal cells.
