The analysis of photosynthetic pigments, ascorbic acid and micronutrients - a tool for evaluation of the effect of air pollution in Norway spruce (Picea abies)

Photosynthetic pigments, ascorbic acid and major macronutrients were studied in Norway spruce needles as stress indicators. Analyses were carried out on ten selected forest plots in the Zasavje in Central Slovenia, an area highly polluted by thermal power plant. The same investigations were carried out also at the high plateau Pokljuka, an area with relatively clean air, situated at the NE part of the Triglav National Park in the Julian Alps. The analyses of biochemical parameters of the spruce needles showed great impact of air pollutants from thermal power plant in the Zasavje district (high total sulphur content, disturbed mineral nutrition, low content of chlorophylls and disturbed composition and age pattern of photosynthetic pigments). Analyses of the same parameters in the Norway spruce needles from the Pokljuka profile showed rather natural situation, e.g. altitude depended pattern with small disturbance detected at the lowest sampling site which could be ascribed to air pollutants from the nearby and more remote pollution sources. The results of study confirmed the role of analysed parameters as vitality indicators in forest decline studies.
