International symposium for preservation of the Przewalski Horse

The International Symposium on Preservation of the Przewalski Horse was held in Kiev from October 4 to 9, 1999. More than 120 participants from 15 countries in the world were present. The results of the discussions were summarized and published in a final document which is also presented in this article. The most important points of the document are: success of the project of reintroduction of Przewalski horses in Mongolia; new methods of genetic analysis as powerful tools for investigating pedigree relationships; management of the gene pool of the species; necessity to obtain more knowledge about the natural behaviour, ecology, morphology and genetic of semi-wild population; the creation of electronic International Studbook; future reintroduction programs and cooperation between the institutions; importation of new breeding stock to Askania Nova; creation of new territories in the Ukraine for semi-free groups of Przewalski horses; monitoring of horse populations living in Askania Nova Reserve.
