This review article deals with chemical compounds present in hops that can have beneficial effects on human health. Special attention is focused on chalcones with details given on their pathways of biosynthesis. Genes coding for enzymes implicated in the biosynthesis of these compounds have been intensively investigated in the Czech Republic. Recently, the gene coding for true chalcone synthase has been isolated from Czech Osvald's clone No 72 and its complete nucleotide sequence has been elucidated using a combination of PCR, RT PCR, and inverse PCR methods.
