Presented paper deals with the history of the forestry research on the territory of contemporal Czech Republic. The first forestry experiments can be traced back to the 16th century, but the first forestry research institutions were founded at the end of the 19th century. After the World War I, many new specialised research institutions had been created and subsequently continually integrated into one Forestry and Game Management Research Institute (FGMRI), moved in 1959 into contemporal building in Jiloviste-Strnady (near Prague). In the last ten-year period, the FGMRI was heavily reorganized. The personnel was decreased more than to 50 %, the proportion between particular departments and their activities changed, as well as financial support of research. All these changes contributed to increased efficiency of research work. The next part of the paper brings the information on present structure of FGMRI and its specialization.
