On Estonian coastal swamp forests
2001

In the coastal swamp forests, various soils are represented, such as Umbri Histic Gleysols, Molli Histic Gleysols, Umbric Gleysols, Calcari Mollic Gleysols, Eutri Mollic Gleysols and Rendzic Gleysols. The forest undergrowth structure is determined mainly by soil pH and C/N ratio while for the tree layer the depth of the uppermost (organic) soil horizon is more important. The content of Na differs in soils according to the frequency of flooding by brackish seawater but the statistical testing does not support the significance of the differences. We did not discover any influence of soil Na content on the vegetation. Therefore, classifying coastal swamp forests into a separate subtype is unwarranted. Still, these stands have survived in Estonia only fragmentarily and should be protected as Natura 2000 sites
