Available data on the essential fatty acid requirement of the sea bass (D. labrax), widely cultured in the Mediterranean Sea region, concern mainly early life stages of the species. Characteristics of the lipid composition in relation to rearing temperature and state of EFA-deficiency are also scarce. In this study the effect of rearing temperature and dietary fatty acid composition on the growth and fatty acid metabolism of sea bass were studied in short-term feeding experiments. Fish were held in an experimental seawater recirculation system containing expanded volcanic silt as substrate in the biofilters.
