Increasing damages caused by thrips and virus diseases in protected vegetables

After the first detection of Western Flower Thrips (Frankliniella occidentalis) in 1989 in Hungary it has widely spread in the most important greenhouse areas within a short time and has become the most abundant thrips pest of protected crops. Besides causing only cosmetic damage to fruits, WFT acts as the most important vector of Tomato spotted wilt tospovirus (TSWV), transmitting the disease to many plants.This virus has caused serious losses in protected crops since its appearance in 1993. Chemical control of F.occidentalis is very difficult because of its thigmotactic behaviour and tolerance to insecticides. Biological control using the predatory arthropods Neoseiulus cucumeris, Orius laevigatus and O.insidiosus provides adequate suppression of WFT populations and decreases infection pressure of TSWV in protected vegetable crops.
