Root-knot nematodes of greenhouse vegetables

In Hungary, root-knot nematodes are the most damaging pests of greenhouse vegetables. These microscopic plant-parasites feed inside the roots, inducing the formation of giant cells, which prevent transport of sufficient water and minerals between the roots and the leaves. This provokes above-ground symptoms on plants, including wilting, deficiency of nutrients, reduced growth, decline in fruit production, loss in yield and early senescence. Although the cold-resistant species Meloidogyne hapla as well as the tropical species of M.arenaria, M.javanica and M.incognita are all likely to occur in our glasshouses and plastic tunnels, the most common and most damaging of all is M. incognita.
