Fish fauna of the River Kraszna/Crassna

The River Kraszna, which is 193 km long, takes its source in Rumania and empties into the River Tisza in Hungary. More than 40 fish species lived in it 50-70 years ago, but in the cource of present investigation only 28 species were collected. 23 out of these 28 species are native and 5 are adventive. The reach of the river on the hills in characterized by species: Barbatulus barbatula and Barbus petenyi. The reach of the river on lowland is characterized by 3 species: Sardinius erythrophthalmus, Blicca bjorkna and Gobio albipinnatus. Species found on both reach-types are: Leuciscus cephalus, Gobio gobio, Alburnus alburnus, Rutilus rutilus and Cobitis taenia. The first two species are in greater number on the hilly reach, the other 3 species are on the lowland reach. Two species have a high nature-protecting value: Rutilus pigus virgo (the centre of the area of subspecies is the Danubian basin) and Barbus petenyi (the endemmic fish species of the Danubian basin.)
