The main disadvantages of traditional technology is the high primer energy and lime consumption. From the view of enviromental pollution, primer energy consumption is the most determining factor. To decrease this, temperature of the separation processes and number of crystallisation stages should be reduced. Significant results can be achived only with completely new methods. As a consequense of the development of separation techniques (membrane filtration, electrodialysis, industrial chromatography, cooling chrystallisation) new sugar processing methods without lime can be elaborated.
