Morpho-anatomical and pollen studies in mulberry germplasm | Etudes morpho-anatomiques et du pollen chez le mûrier
2001
Tikader, A. ((Central Sericultural Germplasm Resources Centre, Hosur (Inde))) | Rao, A.A.
Morpho-anatomical and pollen studies were conducted in 330 mulberry germplasm accessions at Central Sericultural and Germplasm Resources Centre, Hosur, India (12.45 degrees N, 77.51 degrees E and altitude 942 m above Mean Sea Level) to group mulberry germplasm. The leaf anatomical parameters like stomata length, breadth, chloroplast number, leaf thickness were found increased with increase in ploidy levels. The mean chloroplast number varied from 10.14 +/- 0.56, 14.35 +/- 1.29 and 17.33 +/- 1. 00 whereas the pollen diameter was 19.02 +/- 0.68, 20.51 +/- 1.46 and 21.88 +/-1.08 in diploid, triploid and tetraploid, respectively. Stomatal parameters, chloroplast number, leaf thickness and pollen diameter showed positive correlation between the groups i.e. with the increase of number and size, while the stomatal frequency and pollen viability showed negative relationship. The frequency distribution in respect of leaf thickness, stomata and pollen characters showed more overlapping between different ploidy. However, fluctuation in chloroplast number and pollen diameter showed comparatively less. Thus, the chloroplast number and pollen diameter could be used as indirect method in grouping mulberry from large number of germplasm accessions
