This survey was carried out from May to August 1997 to describe pig production and productivity in Lower Casamance (Southern Senegal). Pig husbandry production is equally handled by men and women with a predominance of the latter in rural areas. The main breed is the local one with 11 +/-9.1 pigs per household. Almost all the farmers are equipped with a piggery made with local material but 55.4 / of them allow their animals to scavenge during day time from January to June. The feeding system is based on kitchen wastes and agricultural and agro-industrial products and by-products. The age at first farrowing, the number of farrowing/year and the litter size were respectively 12.8 months, 1.8 and 7.5 piglets. Vaccination was organised in 1996 against pasteurellosis with a rate of 25 / and 43.7 / in rural and urban areas, respectively. The main disease encountered was African Swine fever with a death rate of 64.5 / in 1996. Most of the farmers (93 /) kept pig for sale, which occurred mainly at home. The price of an adult pig (15.1 months old, 40 kg body weight) was 27,000 F CFA +/- 6,315. The main opportunities for pork meat consumption for non-Muslims were religious feasts and ritual ceremonies
