[Helminthiasis in beef cattle in Asrikaton village of Malang Regency]

Retrospective study on Helminthiasis in cattle was done in Asrikaton village of Malang regency from August 24 to September 26, 1998. Simple random sampling was used to select 45 farmers out of 169 cattle owners in the village. A total of 70 feces from 70 cattle owned by the selected farmers were then sent to the Animal Health Laboratory for investigation. Various kind of egg infection, degree of infestation (EPG) and the prevalence of the disease were examined in a Floatation (Nematode infection) and Sedimentation (Trematode infection) test. Prevalence differences between dry and wet area was analyzed by using Chi-square method. The study showed that only 5 cattle (7.14 percent) were free from either. Floatation or Sedimentation test; and the prevalence of Helminthiasis was 92.86 percent. Bunostomum sp. and Fasciola sp. have the highest prevalence, 45.71 percent and 55.71 percent respectively for Floatation and Sedimentation test. Each animal could be infected by one (45.71 percent), two (30.00 percent), three (12.86 percent), four (2.86 percent) and five species (1.43 percent) of parasites. The degree of infestation was considered heavy (12.86 percent), moderate (18.57 percent) and light (61.43 percent). The prevalence differences between dry vs wet area was insignificant (X at the power of 2 = 0.18, P = 0.75). This was mainly due to the fact that most of the cattle in dry area work and have roughages from wet area, which might increase the possibility of Trematode infection
