Pathogenesis of hydropericardium in litchi disease of broiler chicks

Studies on the pathogenesis of fiuid/ transudate accumulation in hydropericardium syndrome (HPS) of broiler chicks revealed that experimentally infected birds developed anaemia, hypoproteinemia, hyperkalemia and hypernatremia in addition to severe hydropericardium and hepatitis. It was suggested that HPS infection might have caused some damage to the endothelial pores (as revealed by presence of evens blue in the pericardial fluid) rather than causing increased permeability through widened endothelial junctions (because no carbon labelling of capillaries was found). Increased serum leve's of aspartate transminase, alanine transminase and creatinine indicated that maximum tissue damage in HPS took place between 66 to 96h post infection.
