A study of effects of sulphur oxidizing microorganisms on the growth of cotton.

Efficacy of five promising sulphur oxidizing cultures, individually and in combination were evaluated on cotton crop in pot culture trial. The growth parameters viz., plant height, picked bolls/plant, seed cotton yield, sulphur uptake and protein content in seed were increased significantly due to inoculation of all cultures under study with or without sulphur fertilizer. However, each culture responded more in conjugation with elemental sulphur fertilizer. The composite culture of two bacteria and three fungi with sulphur has given maximum response in respect of yield, sulphur uptake and protein percentage in cotton seed. The increase in yield, sulphur uptake and protein were renged from 5 to 30 per cent due to different cultures over uninoculated control. The micronial population in the soil during crop growth period was also increased by two folds and found maximum at 60 days after inoculation.
