Metabolic alterations in Sorghum bicolor under water-stress

Water stress induced by polyethylene glycol (PEG-6000) at seedling stage in three different varieties of rabi sorghum caused significant accumulation of proline, reducing sugars and phenols. But the contents of protein, starch, non-reducing sugars, total sugars and chlorophyll were significantly decreased. Positive correlation was observed between proline synthesis and intensity of water stress imposed. However, proline content was high in RSLG-262 and low in Swati, The high proline accumulator RSLG-262 was also high accumulator of reducing sugars, total phenols and had more chlorophyll pigments. While low proline accumulator Swati showed low accumulation of reducing sugars, total phenols and had low chlorophyll pigments. Sorghum variety M-35-1 was found to be moderate accumulator of proline, reducing sugars, and starch. But reverse trend was noticed regarding protein content as compared to RSLG-262 and Swati. The present investigation revealed that besides proline, reducing sugars, starch, phenols and proteins could be the additional reliable indicators for the assessment of drought tolerance in different genotypes of Sorghum.
