Identification of azolla hybrid using protein and isozyme markers*
2000
Konde, V.B. | Knannaiyan, S. (Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore (India)).
To improve the agronomic traits of Azolla, sexaul Hybridization has been done between Azolla filiculoides and Azolla microphylla. Identical chromosome number of the species and ambiguous morphological characters necessitated to look for molecular makers to establish the hybridity. SDS-PAGE of leaf protein revealed transfer of six male-specific proteins to the Azolla hybrid. Rong Ping. Further, inheritance of the Est 1/a and Est 3/c loci of esterase and Px 3/b and Px 3/e loci of peroxidase have not only established the hybridity but were also found to be useful as markers to distinguish the Azolla hybrids from the parents.
