Effect of graded levels of iodine supplementation on the performance of barbari goats

Barbari goats (12) of about 10-12 months of age (16.8 1.56 kg), distributed randomly into 3 groups of 4 animals each, were fed on a conventional concentrate mixture along with oat hay ad lib. The dietary treatments included supplementation of iodine (as solution of KI) @ 0, 40 and 80 g/day to each of the animals under groups T1, T2 and T3 respectively, receiving a basal diet containing 0.45 g iodine per g DM.A metabolism trial was conducted at the end of the 120 day experimental feeding followed by blood collection. Besides, there was fortnightly recording of body weight changes. The intake of DM, CP, DCP and ME, and digestibility of nutrients were similar among the various treatments except for the EE digestibility which was significantly higher in group T3. Retention of nitrogen by goats did not vary significantly among the treatments. Average daily gain tended to be better with the highest level of iodine supplementation. Haemoglobin in blood and serum concentrations of total protein, alanine and aspartate transaminases, alkaline phosphatase, calcium and inorganic phosphorus were similar across the treatments, whereas serum glucose was significantly higher in both the iodine supplemented groups. It was concluded that, overall, no significant effects of iodine levels were evident probably because of the short duration of the experimentation.
