Virulence diversity among isolates of Colletotrichum graminicola infecting foliage, stalk and grains of Sorghum

Investigation were undertaken to study virulence diversity among seven isolates of C. graminicola infecting foliage, grain and stalk of sorghum in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. Pathogenicity of the isolates was studied on six selected cultivars in the greenhouse. Conidial suspension (1'103 conidia ml-1) of each isolate was spray-inoculated on pot grown plants at three growth stages, on foliageat 10- and 25-day-old plants, and on green grains (70 days after sowing). Disease score on a 1-5 scale based on per cent area infected for foliage and and type of symptoms on grains were recorded. On the basis of virulence (Per cent Disease Indices) and symptoms on grain and foliage, six pathotypes were distinguished. Highly significant effects of isolates, sorghum lines and isolate ' sorghum lines were observed.Although some isolates from foliage could infect grains, organ-specificity was observed in some others. Three lines- Kekri local, 555 and M 36203 showed differential grain symptoms due to different isolates. Utility of symptom types on grain for studying virulence diversity in C. graminicola, and its epidemiological significance, are discussed.
