Pseudomonas fluorescens mediated systemic resistance against late leaf spot of groundnut

Late leaf spot (Cercosporidium personatum) is a serious disease in groundnut. Although the disease can be controlled by certain fungicides, these fungicides are expensive and cause environmental pollution. Biological control of plant diseases using antagonistic bacteria may be an alternative approach to the use of hazardous chemical fungicides. Among the several isolates of Pseudomonas fluorescens screened for their efficacy in the management of late leaf spot disease under greenhouse conditions, the isolate Pf1 significantly reduced the disease. Seed treatment followed by foliar application of P. fluorescens Pf1 talc-based powder formulation effectively controlled the disease under field conditions and increased the pod yield. Inoculation of P. fluorescens induced resistance against C. personatum. Maximum disease protection was observed at 30 days after sowing by seed treatment with P. fluorescens. Seed treatment with P. fluorescens increased the activity of phenylalanine ammonia-lyase, phenolic content and lytic enzymes. The activity was very much enhanced when the P. fluorescens treated plants were challenge inoculated with C. personatum.
