In pulses a large number of improved varieties and their matching production technology have been developed, but their potential is not being realized as a large number of diseases and insect pests reduce the yield drastically. Though their control measures bases on chemicals have been worked out, they are not only costly and beyond the reach of the pulse farmers, but are hazardous and pollute the environment. The integrated pest management approach which is the blend of resistant varieties; use of botanicals and biological control; adoption of appropriate agro-techniques; and need-based use of chemicals is cheap, easy and pollution-free technique for increasing the production of pulses.
