Tuber yield and fertilizer use efficiency as influenced by tillage and mulching in potato

An experiment was conducted at Jalandhar during 1999-2000 to study the influence of tillage (conventional, subsoiling and minimum tillage ) and mulch on tuber yield and fertilizer use efficiency of potato. Conventional tillage produced highest tuber yield (35.2 t/ha) and recorded maximum number (446 thousand/ha) of tubers. Minimum tillage reduced tuber yield by 7 per cent. Subsoiling had no positive effect on yield or number of tubers. The fertilizers' use efficiency (tuber yield /kg of nutrient) of applied PK (no N) was increased by minimum tillage when potato was grown with mulch. The efficiency of applied PK was higher with conventional tillage while the efficiency of 50 per cent NPK + biofertilizers + FYM , 100 per cent of recommended dose of NP, NK and NPK treatment was not affected by tillage practices.
