Low and unsustainable productivity of pulses and oilseeds, a major crop of rainfed ecosystem of the Yamuna-Chambal ravinous alluvial soil region, can be increased on a sustainable basis by intercropping of mungbean in pigeonpea and castor. This system is efficient with respect to resource utilization, synergical effect producing and easily adaptable by the resource poor farmers in the region. PS 16 mungbean, a short-duration leguminous crop, can successfully be used as intercrops in rainfed pigeonpea/castor for higher productivity and economic returns on sustained basis in Yamuna-Chambal arable ravine lands.
