Regeneration of natural stand bamboos of Gigantochloa scortechinii. Natural bamboo stands are found mostly in ex-logging areas in Peninsular Malaysia. The total estimated area of bamboo recognised as forest compartments is 421 722 ha accounting for 6.9 per cent of the total forested land or 9.5 per cent of the total forest reserves in Peninsular Malaysia. Due to the importance of bamboo culm utilisation, especially that of Gigantochloa scortechinii, a study on clump regeneration was undertaken at Nami, Kedah. Separate sites of two categories A1, A2 and B1, B2 were selected. Sites B1 and B2 were situated on a hilly area of gradient 30 per cent. Parameters such as diameter-breast height (dbh), number of shoots sprouted, height and basal area of clumps were monitored during the first year and five years later. Many factors influenced the growth and distribution of the natural stand bamboos such as climate and topography. Rainfall played an important role in the sprouting and growth. Clumps on the flat land showed an increase in height and basal area in comparison to the hilly area. Shoots developed along the clump's periphery.
