Diagnosis of nutrient constraints to abaca (Musa textilis Nee) among selected soils in eastern Visayas [Philippines] by nutrient omission pot trial

Possible nutrient constraints in abaca producing areas in Eastern Visayas [Philippines] were identified through nutrient omission trial using Haplustult (Maasin clay loam), Paleudalf (Umingan clay loam) and Tropept (Unmapped mountain soil). Plant parameters such as plant height, leaf length and width and total leaf area and dry matter yield as well as nutrient uptake were measured to determine the nutrient constraints that would affect growth and development of abaca. The different soils have different nutrient supplying capacity as a result of their variability in physico-chemical properties. Under screenhouse condition, Haplustult soil was deficient in P which resulted to an inferior performance and dry matter production of four month old abaca seedling. On the other hand, Paleudalf soil had sufficient nutrient to support plant growth, while Tropept soil was slightly deficient in S. Omission of the different essential nutrients also affected the nutrient content of the newly expanded leaves of the abaca plant. Amending Ca either as CaCl2 or Ca (OH)2 did not improve the performance of abaca in Haplustult or Tropept
