Ruminal degradability of dry matter, crude protein, and neutral detergent fiber in potential feed protein sources of different tannin content

Of the 22 fodder species screened, gliricidia (Gliricidia sepium) (Jacq.) Kunth ex. Walp), binunga (Macaranga tanarius (L.) Muell. Arg.), leucaena (Leucaena leucocephala (Lamk) dewit), anubing (Artocarpus ovatus Blanco), flemingia (Flemingia macrophylla (Willd.) Merr) and malaipil (Intia acuminata Merrill.) were selected as the potential indigenous feed protein sources based on crude protein and condensed tannin content. Among these species, the degradability of DM [dry matter] and CP[crude protein] was highest in gliricidia and binunga followed by leucaena. The rate of CP disappearance was lower in leucaena than gliricidia and malaipil but almost similar with that in flemingia. Extractable CT [condensed tannin] was negatively correlated with the digestibility of DM, CP and NDF [neutral detergent fiber] in all species either in dry or fresh form. Level of tannin concentration and the physical preparation of the species influenced the relationship between tannin content and the ruminal digestion kinetics of DM and CP. The mixing of dry flemingia leaves with either that of gliricidia and leucaena resulted in the depression in DM and CP digestibility of the mixture. In the gliricidia + flemingia mixture, the NDF digestibility was highly improved and was comparable with that of pure gliricidia sample. Further, the ruminal digestion kinetics of resulting mixtures was different in some instances as compared to the pure samples of the individual component species
