Effect of distance learner performance of the University of the Philippines Open University [College, Laguna, Philippines] Communication System
2001
Bandalaria, M.D.P.
A study to determine the impact of communication system on the performance of the Filipino distance learners was conducted using the combination of survey-research, content analysis, and portfolio assessment and involving 297 respondents categorized into six groups. Results showed that the UP Open University (UPOU) has the basic communication infrastructure at the Headquarters and its Learning Centers to facilitate interactions among the various sectors at the university. The predominance of the use of telephone among sectors in the UPOU system and the emerging role of text messaging through cellular/mobile phones in communication interactions involving the students were observed in the different communication routes. The cost and access factors were found to be the major considerations in the choice of which communication technology to use. All communication interactions involving the students were found to have negative correlation with academic performance with the exception of UPOU to student route. Moreover, all communication interactions were found to have weak and insignificant relationship with academic performance except for student to LCC [Learning Center Coordinators] route (p.01). Both home and work environments have weak and insignificant relationship with academic performance. Among the other factors considered in this study, only attendance to study sessions was found to have positive and significant relationship with academic performance. The variables studied, however, were found to influence students' persistence to stay in the program thus validating the western-based attrition/persistence model for distance education under the Philippine setting. Policy recommendations were forwarded and research gaps were identified for future consideration
