Nutritive value of rice straw-molasses silage, corn stover-molasses silage and sugarcane tops-molasses silage as cattle feed

A series of digestion trials was conducted to evaluate the nutritive values of rice straw molasses silage (RSMS), corn stover-molasses silage (CSMS0, sugarcane tops-molasses silage (SCTMS) and pasture grass (PG) using Holstein Friesian x Red Sindhi cattle. Pasture grass had consistently better nutrient composition, coefficients of digestion, digestible nutrient composition, coefficients of digestion, digestible nutrient contents, dry matter and total digestible nutrient intakes based on metabolic weights. Positive nitrogen balance was observed on all animals fed with the four roughages with PG slightly better than the others in promoting nitrogen retention. Only animals fed with CSMS and PG were observed to have gained in weight during the digestion trials. CSMS had better nutrient composition, dry matter (DM) and total digestible nutrients (TDN) intake based on metabolic weight, nitrogen retention and body weight gains than RSMS nad SCTMS. Among the 3 by-product silage, only CSMS showed comparable feeding value with pasture grass.
