Optimizing efficiency of pheromone traps for the selective trapping of rhinoceros beetle, Oryctes rhinoceros using an aggregation pheromone, ethyl 4-methyloctanoate

Selective trapping of rhinoceros beetle using the aggregations pheromone ethyl 4-methyloctanoate presents a new option for the reduction of the beetle population in the field and its control. Trapping experiments were conducted to evaluate the optimum conditions necessary for maximum trapping efficiency. Findings showed that only the standard plastic bucket traps (with or without coconut wood) were able to retain 86-96% of the beetles inside the traps after 48 hours. The bucket trap has a capacity of 24L with a 5-cm hole at the center of the cover. Other traps evaluated gave between 3-20% beetle retention. Addition of old coconut wood in traps resulted in significantly higher catches of rhinoceros beetle than in pheromone or coconut wood alone. This demonstrated a synergestic effect between the rhinoceros beetle pheromone and plant volatiles from the coconut wood. There was no significant differences between the number of beetles caught in traps with ethyl 4-methyloctanoate with or without ethyl chrysanthemumate. The latter failed to produce the synergestic effect observed in the incorporation of coconut wood in the pheromone traps. Traps 117m above ground caught significantly more beetles than the traps at ground level.
