Performance of corn under acid soil condition

The performance and profitability of 14 corn varieties under sloping acid upland environment was evaluated in Claveria, Misamis Oriental [Philippines] from February to June 1999. Varieties tested were AH 87F; AH/8F, AH17C, AH78, AH87, AH17, AH67, AH8326, P3014, P3023, C838, P30532, Mariana 2, and AH8327. Results showed that among the varieties tested, AH67 gave the highest grain yield of 9.25 t/ha, weight of corn ears of 2,636.67g, weight of corn cobs of 541.67g and diameter of corn ear of 4.91 cm as well as the longest average maturity period of 121.67 days from sowing. However, based on the above parameters, AH67 did not differ statistically with P3023, AH8326 and P3014 except on the height of corn ear including the numbers of days to 50% tasseling for P3014. Economic analysis showed that AH67 had the highest gross income of P 64,750.00, net income of P 24,290.00 with an ROI of P 0.60 per peso. The highest grain yield of 925 t/ha was obtained from AH67 followed by P3023 (8.65g), C838 (8.30g), AH78 (8.27g), AH17C (8.26g), P3014 (8.17g), 30J32 (8.07g) and AH87 (7.89g). However, differences among treatment mean did not vary significantly from one variety to another. The lowest grain yield of 6.76 t/ha was attained from AH18 but is statistically comparable with that of AH888 327, (7.01g), AH87F (7.61g), AH17 (7.76g), Mariana 2 (7.73g), AH87 (7.89g), AH8326 (7.98g) and 30J32 (8.07g). Results of grain yield more likely followed similar trend with weight of corn ears and corn cobs. It was observed that varieties with highest weight of corn ears, weight of corn cobs and diameter of corn ears generally gave the highest grain yield in tons per hectare.
