A seasonal study for establishing Ulva fasciata (Chlorophyta) as a biological monitor for pollution at Buleji and Paradise point, near Karachi [Pakistan]

The study was conducted to assess the metal pollution in the green seaweed Ulva fasciata at two different coasts: Buleji & Paradise Point near Karachi city of Pakistan. The ten metals analyzed from this seaweed using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry were Manganese, Copper, Nickel, Zinc, Magnesium, Iron, Chromium, Lead, Cobalt & Cadmium. The study revealed that the levels of most of the metals in U. fasciata vary from season to season, year to year and area to area, the metal ranges were: Manganese 0.028-1.7 microgram/g, Copper 0.01-0.161 microgram/g, Nickel 0.006-0.11 microgram/g, Zinc 0.016-0.38 microgram/g, Magnesium 1.76-8.67 microgram/g, Iron 0.46-5.86 microgram/g, Chromium 0.007-0.2 microgram/g, Lead 0.023-0.117 microgram/g, Cobalt 0.007-0.045 microgram/g and Cadmium 0.003-0.04 microgram/g. The order of metal distribution at Buleji was Mg greater than Fe greater than Mn greater than Zn greater than Cr greater than Cu greater than Pb greater than Ni greater than Co greater tha Cd whereas at Paradise Point the order of metal distribution in Ulva fasciata was Mg greater than Fe greater than Ma greater than Cu greater than Pb, Cr greater than Zn greater than Ni greater than Co greater than Cd. All Buleji and Paradise Point samples provided positive correlation coefficient except at Paradise Point Nickel & Manganese and Nickel & Copper were negatively. correlated. Most of the metals had significant relationship.
