Effect of different phosphate sources in broiler rations: Calcium and phosphorus status and bio-availability

A feeding trial was conducted in two phases (starter & finisher) to evaluate the calcium (Ca) and phosphorus (P) status in the serum and tibia and the bio-availability of different P sources, in Arboracres broilers. Four P sources (dicalcium phosphate, bone meal, rock phosphate and treated rock phosphate) were used to formulate four starter and four finisher rations having 0.45% and 0.38% available P. respectively. The tibia ash percentage was greater (P0.05) in birds fed ration containing dicalcium phosphate than others; however no significant differences were noticed among other. The Ca contents in tibia bones were maximum (P0.05) with bone meal containing diets as compared to minimum (P0.05) with rock phosphate. Higher P contents (P0.05) were noticed in tibia bones of birds having ration containing dicalcium phosphate with bone meal. Calcium contents in the serum were maximum (P0.05) with treated rock phosphate, whereas minimum (P0.05) in the blood of birds fed ration comprising bone meal. Phosphorus contents wre higher (P 0.05) in the serum of birds provided with the ration containing dicalcium phosphate. Using dicalcium phosphate as a reference, the relative biological value of rock phosphate was higher than other P sources.
