A diagnostic study of Lalazar valley [Pakistan]: Problems and prospects for development

Lalazar is one of the remote but beautiful valleys in District Mansehra. There are 18 villages in the valley. The population of the valley is about 12,000 which mainly depends on agriculture. The Potato Research Centre established by the NWFP Agricultural University, Peshawar, has greatly helped in increasing the productivity of Potato and introducing the cultivation of other crops like Peas, Cabbage, Turnip and Cauliflower. The farmers use improved agricultural inputs and harvest the crops at time when its supply is very low in the plan area and as such growers get a good return on their output. However, due to the poor condition of roads the transportation and marketing costs of agricultural input/output is very high. These costs can substantially be reduced if there are good roads and transportation facilities. Natural bushes, ornamental plants, beautiful flowers and other green grasses have made the area worth seeing and an attractive spot for tourists. The number of tourists visiting the area would be increased manifold if the area is provided with infrastructure and facilities like electricity, hotelling, transportation and health. In return this will boost up economic activities which will enhance the income of the local community.
