Differences on the effects of 14-demethylation inhibitors on the growth and sterol metabolism of cereals

The effects of two systemic fungicides i. e. triarimol (EL-273) and triforine (funginex/saprol) on the growth, chloroplast pigments and sterol biosynthesis in barley, wheat and maize seedlings were studied. In contrast to their similar modes of action on fungi, the two fungicides acted differently on higher plants. Triarimol was an effective growth retardant and an inhibitor of 14-demethylation and second alkylation (of the sterol side chain) reactions of phytosterol biosynthesis. Triforine was least effective in this respect. None of the fungicides tested interfered in the biosynthesis of chloroplast pigments, chlorophylls and carotenoids. Sterol biosynthesis in barley and wheat seedlings was more affected by triarimol compared to maize seedlings.
