Fatty acid composition of soybean, mustard and taramira oils by C13 FT NMR spectroscopy

Carbon-13 FT NMR has been used to analyze saturated, unsaturated fatty acid composition (quantitatively) of soybean, mustard and taramira oils. Gated proton decoupling (suppressed NOE) pulse sequence has been used for proper quantitative integration of carbon-13 peaks. To reduce spin lattice relaxation time (for quicker analysis) solution of oil in CDCI3 has been made in 1:3 v/v oil solution. In some cases neat oil using external deuterium lock without any solvent (neat sample) has been used. The result of analysis in CDCI3 solvent shows for soybean oil: 10.89% saturated fatty acids, 23.96% monoene acid chains (acids with one double bonds) and 11.95% triene (acids with three double bonds). For mustard oil: 7.82% saturated fatty acid, 54.68% monoene acids, 25.0% for diene acids and 12.5% for triene acids. For taramira oil: 5.57% for saturated fatty acids chains, 61.52 % for monoene acids and 16.96% for triene acids.
