Varietal response of coconut to Sequential Coconut Toddy and Nut Production Scheme (SCTNP)

Findings showed that Dwarf x tall hybrids, Malayan Red Dwarf x Baybay tall (MRD x BAYT), Malayan Red Dwarf x Tagnanan tall (MRD x TAGF), and Catigan Green Dwarf x Laguna tall (CATD x LAGT) produced significantly higher toddy (495-699 l/tree per year) and nut yield (143-169 nut/tree per year) compared to Laguna tall (LAGT) 364 L and 123 nuts/tree per year). Difference in terms of floral characteristics of the coconut cultivars and hybrids contributed significantly to the differences in the sap/toddy and nut yields. Based on one year and eight months production period, the SCTNP [sequential coconut toddy and nut production] palms yielding toddy and nuts produced an average annual net returns of Php 246,705. This was ten times more than the net returns from the common practice of nut production or from nut/copra yield alone (Php 23,855). SCTNP also manifested higher benefit-cost ratio (1.84) over the nut production alone (1.06). The dwarf x tall hybrids are highly recommended materials for SCTNP scheme as reflected on their higher net returns and benefit-cost ratio over the local varieties
