Assessment of the microbiological population of hot spring waters in Los Banos [Laguna, Philippines]

Water samples from 10 resorts in Los Banos were used in this study. The water samples were collected from hot springs which are the main sources of water supply for swimming pools and other domestic purposes. Five hundred ml of water samples were collected in duplicate per resort. The water samples were analyzed for microbial population using the standard culture method in appropriate media and with petrifilm plates (3M) assay system. Results showed that eight out of the ten resorts' water sources showed bacteriological populations above the required standard of only 100 organisms per 100 ml. Two water sources (20%) showed no growth on culture assays. Only one resort gave a positive result with Escherichia coli, the index for the potability of water, and eight grew too numerous to count (TNTC) coliform, now also considered an index of water potability. Other enterics isolated were Klebsiella, Pseudomonas and Proteus spp. One unidentified anaerobic organism was also isolated. Samples from the water sources of two resorts had significant number of molds growing in the water culture
