Egg and shell weight, hatching and production performance of Japanese broiler quails

A study was conducted to investigate egg and shell weight, hatching and performance of Japanese quails. Two hundred and sixty eggs were incubated and the chicks hatched were reared for 30 days at the NWFP Agricultural University, Poultry Farm, Peshawar. Mean egg weight was 11.10 g and found positively and significantly (P less than 0.01) correlated (r=0.27) with hatching chick weight. Egg weight was also found positively but non- significantly correlated (r=0.067) with delivered body weight of the Japanese quails at 30th day age. Egg shell weight was 0.78 g and had a significant effect (P less than 0.01) on percent hatchability. Mean fertility, early, and late embryonic mortality and percentages of malformed chicks were 82.69, 20.25, 3.60 and 4.16%, respectively. Hatchability was 58.84% on the basis of total number of eggs set and 71.16% on the basis of fertile eggs. Average loss in egg contents during incubation was 20.36%. Mean weight of day old chick was 8.06 g and delivered body weight at the age of day 30th was 116.09 g, resulting 108.03 g body weight gain. Average feed consumption per quail was 292.28 g with a Feed Conversion ratio (FCR) of 2.52.
