The rainfed cropped area constitutes about 22 percent of the total cropped area; eighty percent of which is used for wheat production. There are great seasonal and total rainfall variations which consequently affect wheat crop production. The present study analyses the wheat production in the rainfed area like Fatehjang. It was observed that on cumulative basis, the study year (1998-99) received about 50 percent rainfall of an average normal year. The use of nitrogen (N) and phosphorous (P) was quite low with average values of 17 and 11 kg ha-1, respectively. Grain yield ranged from 0.76 to 2.74 t ha-1 with an average value of 1.35 t ha-1. The analysis of long term rainfall data of Rawalpindi and Jehlum showed high variability (CV= 98-199%) during October to December than January to April (CV= 28-93%). To overcome the moisture stress, some management practices are suggested for the enhancement of production on sustainable basis under the rainfed conditions.
