A study was conducted to assess the levels of trace metals in different fish species as well as water samples of river Sohan (Rawalpindi). Twenty four fish samples of Catla catla and Labeo rohita were collected in April 1996 from Sohan river and were analyzed for lead, cadmium, chromium, copper, cobalt, nickel, zinc, iron, manganese and arsenic. Water samples were also collected from January 1996 to December 1996 after every two months and were analyzed for the same trace metals. Results indicated that elevated level of metal are present in the water as well as in the edible muscle of fish species from river Sohan which receives a huge quantity of industrial and municipal liquid wastes from Rawalpindi and Islamabad. The water of the river is highly polluted and unfit for drinking and irrigation purposes. On the basis of these results, we can predict that if present situation of water pollution continues then in the future survival of fish population shall be extremely difficult in this river.
