Study on the intercropping of soybean with maize

In order to find out the land utilization efficiency of soybean and maize intercropping, experiments were conducted at two locations during Spring-1998 at Swabi and Peshawar. Maize hybrid Shahenshah and soybean variety Wahab-93 were planted as sole crops and inters copped in alternate rows with four replications using RCB design. Results indicated that intercropping significantly reduced plant height of soybean and taller plants were observed in sole cropping system. Days to maturity of soybean increased in intercropping as compared to mono cropping. Seed yield of soybean was adversely affected by intercropping with maize. Results further indicated that intercropped maize yields were at par with the sole crops in both the intercropping experiments. There was no significant effect on the plant height and days to maturity of maize in intercropping and mono, cropping systems. Land equivalent Ratio (LER) for intercropping system was greater (1.499 and 1.599) than sole cropping system indicating better land utilization efficiency and more income to the farmers. From the present investigations, it can be concluded that soybean can successfully be intercropped with maize crop for an efficient use of land.
