Paclobutrazol application and GA3-like levels in relation to flowering in `Carabao' mango

Induction of flowering in `Carabao' mango was greatly improved when paclobutrazol was used in conjunction with KNO3 foliar spray. Paclobutrazol when applied as a soil drench at the rate of 0.5 to 1.5 g per meter canopy diameter at least doubled at the flowering intensity or number of flowering shoots and yielded 10 times more fruits compared to the control. Moreover, the panicles were longer in treated trees but succeeding leaf flushes were shorter than the control. GA3-like levels declined in shoots and roots starting one month after paclobutrazol application, the decrease being inversely proportional to the concentration of paclobutrazol applied. The low level of gibberellic acid in mango shoots and roots corresponds to a higher incidence of flowering, indicating that high levels of this hormone is indeed inhibitory to flowering in mango. The optimum dose for paclobutrazol application has also been established as not higher than 1 gram paclobutrazol per meter canopy diameter for the initial application. Finally, a mechanism of flowering in mango is presented with the above evidence to support the theory that grafted, bearing-stage mango trees do not need a floral promoter but just removal of a flowering inhibitor, in this case gibberellic acid, for flowering to proceed
