Cultivar and soil effects on the protein content of wheat

A field investigation was carried at four zonal trial stations of Nuclear Institute of Agriculture, Tandojam, to assess the effects of cultivar and soil characteristics on protein content of ten different varieties of wheat. These trial stations are located in Badin, Sukkur, Jacobabad and Dadu Districts. Results of the study envisaged that, on the average, the cultivars Soghat-90 produced the highest yield i.e. 3804 kg/ha, it was flowed by Mehran-89, Sarsabz, and TJ-83 those yielded 3641, 3543, and 3534 kg/ha., respectively. Whereas, cultivar Thori produced the lowest yield, on an average, cultivar Thori produced 256 k/ha. The protein and nitrogen content of the grain were also higher in the cultivars those produced the highest yields with a significant differences in N and protein content at the 1% probability. However, the correlation studies demonstrated that organic matter and total soil nitrogen had a significant positive effect on yield, protein, and N content in the grains, and were good protein predictor in wheat. While, the other soil characteristics i.e. sand, silt, clay, soil pH1, EC2, CaCO3, available P and exchangeable K did not show significant relation with N and protein content of grains.
