Phenotypic and genotypic variance, heritability (h2), genetic advance (GA),correlation coefficients and path coefficient analysis were conducted for yield and yield components in 16 genotypes of wheat under rainfed conditions. High heritability estimates coupled with high genetic advance were observed for spike length, 1000 grain weight, flag leaf area and biomass. Therefore, these characters were controlled by additive gene-action and improvement may be expected by direct selection. High direct effects were contributed by biomass and harvest index although the latter had negative association with grain yield. Further it was observed that high indirect contribution was via biomass by most of the yield components and hence these two traits (biomass and harvest index) should be given emphasis while selecting high yielding wheat cultivars for rainfed conditions.
