Elevation and transplanting time affect growth and yield of onion crop

The experiment was conducted at three different altitudes (914.4 m to 1066.8 m; 1067.10 m to 1524 m and above 1524.30 m) in Dir district of NWFP (Pakistan). At each location, transplanting was done on three different dates (February 15, March 01 and 15). Effects of elevations were non- significant in all aspects of crop studied. Seedlings transplanted on March 01, however, had significantly higher plant height (41.75 cm), weight of various categories of bulbs i.e. small, medium and large (1.12 kg, 1.93 kg and 2.86 kg respectively) and total square meter plot (5.91 kg). March 01 crop had significantly reduced number (14.02) of bulbs per kg to February and March IS crop. This, in other words, indicated bigger bulbs size on the average. From zone versus sowing time interaction, it was concluded that February 15 is the best sowing time at lower altitude, March 15 is suitable time for transplanting onion seedlings at elevation above 1524.30 m. Whereas March 01 is best for transplanting time at elevations between 1067.10m and 1524m.
