Milk ejection in relation to milk flow profiles [Review]

The aim of the review is to give the view on the regulation of milk ejection in dairy cows. The effect of vegetative nervous system and catecholamine in blood on milk flow is discussed at both a teat end and mammary duct levels. It is still not completely clear whether milk flow rate during milking is more influenced by relaxation of the teat sphincter or flow rate of milk from the alveoli throughout the mammary ducts. The importance of oxytocin under the conditions of disturbed milk flow is not clear if oxytocin overcomes the threshold concentration. Also peripheral effect of vegetative nervous system and catecholamine could play a role in a regulation of milk flow rate too, when the release of oxytocin is changed. It seems that the activity of peripheral vegetative system and the different release of sufficient amount of oxytocin could be an indicator of readiness and willingness of dairy cows to be milked
